Comal County Crime Stoppers is celebrating its 25^th year of service this year and held a dinner in downtown New Braunfels to honor the occasion. Members of the Crimestoppers Board,  Comal County Sheriff Bob Holder, New Braunfels Police Chief Tom Wibert, Garden Ridge Police Chief Donna O`Connor and Bulverde Police Chief Joe Hamilton were on hand for that ceremony.

Comal County Crimestoppers President Joshua Wright says the dinner and ceremony were to honor the local Crimestoppers unit for their 25 years of service, and to celebrate their recent Wassailfest victory, taking home both the Wassail-meister award and the People’s Choice Award.

Looking into the future year Crime Stoppers is also proud to announce that it will be hosting the Texas Crime Stoppers Conference in October of 2012 in the city of New Braunfels. Crime Stoppers organizations from cities all over the state of Texas will be attending this conference and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere that New Braunfels and surrounding areas have to offer.

Comal County Crimestoppers Crowned As Wassailfest 2011 Champions

"For the 3rd year in a row, the Comal County Crimestoppers Unit is the People`s Choice Award winner of Wassailfest. New Braunfels Mayor Gale Pospisil and Downtown Association Director Nancy Bower presented the results Friday, December 3, 2011 in the afternoon, announcing that not only had Crimestoppers won the People`s Choice Award, but also took 1st place in the secretly-judged Wassail-Meister competition."

       From our Crime Stoppers board - It is without saying that an organization such as this is not successful without the help and participation of our caring and loyal community in its effort to keeping our citizens and our communities safe.

"People`s Choice "  Wassailfest 2010 WINNER

The turnout at this year’s Wassailfest, tops 8-thousand according to city estimates, and of those Wassailers, more than 17-hundred took time out of their holiday stroll through downtown to vote on which WassailStop they thought had the best Wassail. It’s known as the People’s Choice Award, and once all the votes were tallied, the Comal County Crimestoppers were named the People’s Choice winners (for the 2nd year in a row).

For the 2nd year in a row, the National Night Off kick-off event was held in conjunction with the Community Resource and Health Fair at Holy Family Church from 9am to noon.

The New Braunfels Comal County Crime Stoppers once again supported the event with a booth. Board members handed out pens, pencils and book covers with the Crime Stoppers phone number 830.620.TIPS (8477) promoting the name and hopefully TIPS to the 24 hour call center. Literature was also shared of how to text a tip, use the web to submit a tip or call in a tip.

Lowe`s of New Braunfels hosted a Safety Saturday, encouraging families to attend their event to learn more about safety at home and school.

Many non-profits organizations attended to show their support and promote safety. New Braunfels Comal County Crime Stoppers handed out information, pens, pencils and book covers. The Comal County Sheriffs Office, New Braunfels Police, Fire and EMS all provided units for give each attendee to gain hands on experiences.  Airlife and DPS helicopters were also present.

Special guests included MCGRUFF, the Crime fighting dog and DAREN the Lion from the DARE (Drug Abuse and Resistance Education) program.

The New Braunfels Comal County Crime Stoppers won the coveted People’s Choice award for the 2009 Wassailfest.

Their wassail beat out 38 other entries to take the title Thursday evening.

The city parks and recreation department Friday morning counted the results of the ballots cast Thursday night.

After counting more than 2,400 ballots, at least twice, Crime Stoppers was declared the winner, said city recreation manager Robin Kunkel.

The dozen winners that comprise the Crime Stoppers wassail-making team and a few friends showed up for the awards ceremony Friday afternoon in the ballroom of the New Braunfels Civic Convention Center. They were in a jovial mood, congratulating each other for a job well done.

Kunkel and Stacy Laird Dicke, director of parks and recreation, presented the awards with City Council member Sandy Nolte to the large Crime Stoppers group.

Groups and businesses varied widely in the amount of wassail they mixed for the event, from 5 or 6 gallons to more than 100 gallons.

The Crime Stoppers team made a 32-gallon batch and still ran out.

“We have battle scars, see,” said Sarah Lehr, showing off a slight burn on her hand from heating the wassail.

“We worked so hard, never stopped,” said Teresa Simpson, vice-chair of New Braunfels Comal County Crime Stoppers. “It helped though that we were No. 1 in the listing,” she said, referring to the map and ballot for Wassailfest, which had Crime Stoppers listed as the first stop.

The Crime Stoppers knew they had to at least be in the running for People’s Choice, because they ran out of their supply of 3,000 disposable cups before the night was over.

“We’ll provide more cups per group next year, as long as they’re biodegradable,” Kunkel said.

Kunkel said attendance at Thursday night’s Wassailfest was about what organizers expected.

“There were about 7,000 to 8,000 people there based on the number of ballots (turned in) and what the police estimated,” she said.
